Mazda RX-7

While we do miss the recently departed Mazda RX-8, luckily for us, the new Mazda RX-7 has been confirmed by the firm's sports car chief. The car will be light and power, just like an RX-7 should be.

According to the company’s sports car chief, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, the RX-7's introduction coincides with the 50 years after the company's first Wankel-powered vehicle, the 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S.

The new Mazda RX-7 will probably get a naturally-aspirated rotary engine, the car will use Mazda's next-generation 16X rotary engine. The 1.6-liter rotary engine is said to be capable of 300 horsepower (224 kW), and that it will feature SKYACTIV technology so that the motor should be emissions-compliant around the globe.

“For a pure sportscar, it must be internal combustion,” Yamaoto said.

The Mazda RX-7 is expected to share the same basic architecture as the next-generation Mazda MX-5, but the car will be heavier and larger, and with an extended wheelbase.

The car will be a two-seater in all markets except for Japan, models will feature a small back seat. Yamaoto did say that the new Mazda RX-7 weighs around 2,800 pounds, aluminum will be used extensively.

The new RX-7 is expected to go on sale sometime in 2017, Auto Review Blog told to expect a price above that of the Nissan 370Z, which starts at around $33,000.
