2014 Mitsubishi Outlander and Sport Limited Edition debut at L.A. Auto Show
A pair of Mitsubishi crossovers are set to make their North American will make their debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 10:35 AM on Thursday, November 29, 2012.
The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander & 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition will ride on different platforms and were developed separately.
Full specs haven't been released, but according to Mitsubishi, the 2014 Outlander will be "among the most fuel-efficient compact CUV with 7-passenger seating as standard".
Featuring a fresh new design direction that emphasizes exterior aerodynamic efficiency, the American 2014 Outlander will be powered by a new gasoline engine equipped with a new version of our advanced MIVEC continuously-variable valve lift timing system for increased fuel economy.
The interior will feature standard seven-passenger seating and a trio of new safety systems including Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition, which was designed to commemorate Mitsubishi Motors' arrival in North America 30 years ago. The car features blacked-out side mirrors; wheel arch trim and roof rails; center bumper; aluminum pedals; black leather seating surfaces; a six-way adjustable power driver's seat; along with dark-chrome alloy wheels and Limited Edition badging.
The automaker said that along with the vehicle presentations, the crossover plug-in hybrid is expected to arrive for sale in the United States next year.
Mitsubishi Mirage outlines U.S. comeback plan
Mitsubishi confirmed last week that it’s going to stay in the United States car market plan that aims to boost sales 45 percent to 80,000 units in the next fiscal year.
Under the plan, Mitsubishi will the company remains committed to the United States and is planning to launch two new nameplates here by 2014.
Mitsubishi president Osamu Masuko recognizes this is not a tenable position and is targeting annual sales of 100,000 as early as 2014.
In related news, the redesigned Outlander PHEV will arrive in July, while the Mirage compact in September 2013.
No wonder Mitsubishi sales are falling rapidly, sales are hovering around the 4000-unit mark monthly, and its market share now stands at 0.4 percent.
Masuko also said the upcoming Mirage will get an electric vehicle variant. Both cars they are hoping to save them look already outdated, and most likely are so far behind the curve in technology, features, and engineering that nobody would pay money for them.
2013 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV live in Paris
Mitsubishi took the stage in Paris production version of the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV (PHEV), that will be launched in the next 12 months by the Japanese brand. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander will be launched other countries in Europe and North America at the beginning of 2013.
Mitsubishi says the Outlander PHEV consists from a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, a pair of 60 kwH electric motors and a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander provides three drive modes to choose from: Pure, Series and Parallel.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is capable run up to 540 miles on a charge and will return an estimated combined fuel efficiency 143.5 mpg US (equal to 143.5 mpg US, 1.64 lt/100km and 172 mpg UK).

Mitsubishi was one of the first launch of the Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this month. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be launch in Japan early next year.
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will feature a choice of three driving modes: Pure (electric-only), Series (electric motors running with the petrol engine recharging the batteries) and a parallel hybrid, with the electric motors aiding the gas engine.
"The environmental performance of an electric vehicle (EV), the cruising range of a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, and the on- and off-road performance of an SUV", said Roger Yasukawa, Mitsubishi Motors North America spokesman.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses a 300V, 12 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, allows the crossover a cruising range of over 55 km or 34 miles. In terms of efficiency, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV a combined fuel efficiency in excess of 61 km/liter on the Japanese driving cycle.
