2014 Cadillac ELR teased before 2013 Detroit Auto Show debut
Cadillac has released the first image of its upcoming 2014 ELR, ahead of its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The ELR is based on the Converj concept unveiled at the Detroit show in 2009. The 2014 Cadillac ELR combines dramatic design with industry-leading extended range electric vehicle technology in a unique luxury coupe.
There's no word on specifications, but the car will use powertrain combines a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack and a four-cylinder engine-generator.
The teaser photo shows the production ELR will be keeping most of the concept's striking design elements.
GM previously confirmed that the 2014 Cadillac ELR will be built at the company’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
Cadillac ELR plug-hybrid production in Volt Plant
General Motors confirmed today that it will build its Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid luxury coupe at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in 2013. GM is investing $35 million to prepare the factory to assemble the new Cadillac ELR.
According to GM North America President Mark Reuss, "The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology. People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design."
While the Cadillac ELR is expected to share underpinnings with the Chevrolet Volt, it will likely boast a greater electric-only range and benefit from both higher performance.
The Cadillac ELR is expected to use an updated version of the Volt powertrain and it will run primarily on electricity. On the other hand, a rear wheel-drive layout wit a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit and a four-cylinder engine-generator.
